Duplex Above the Rooftops of Paris

This stunning apartment spans two levels on the top floors of a building in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. The client reached out to us shortly after purchasing the property. The first objective was to reconfigure the bedroom layout, as the original design didn’t suit his needs. We designed two spacious suites, each with its own bathroom, walk-in closet, and generous terraces.

The existing staircase was preserved and leads to the upper level, which houses the living spaces. This floor is lined with lush, planted terraces. We approached the design with a townhouse spirit: large glass doors, flush thresholds, and wide openings create a seamless connection with the outdoors. The sensation of living outside is truly palpable.

The floors were finished with a dark resin—a bold choice made possible by the abundance of natural light. This finish allowed us to fully renovate the apartment while preserving the existing underfloor heating system.

This upper level wraps around a central core that contains the elevator, stairwell, and technical columns. We decided to clad this core in custom walnut cabinetry that conceals doors and integrates bookshelves and storage. Walnut is used throughout the space, and we paid special attention to the craftsmanship and finishes provided by our artisans. As a result, the kitchen and living room share a cohesive material language and tonal harmony.

One of the great advantages of working with a duplex layout is the ability to create two distinct atmospheres. While maintaining overall consistency through the use of materials—veneers, paneling, integrated handles—the bedroom level is intentionally brighter and softer. Light oak was used extensively. The main suite includes a large bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a spacious bathroom. Here, the flooring is a light resin, evoking polished concrete, and the vanity is crafted in travertine.

We played with light and views throughout the space, placing mirrors in strategic spots to amplify depth, and creating intimacy where it was needed.
